Experiencing a lack of personal agency?
Wanting to take better command of your life?
Patricia Risch, PCC
What is personal agency? How do you gain a sense of personal agency?
Agency is feeling in command of your life. It is about being fully aware of your choices and making choices aligned with your values, beliefs and inner being, as well as having the capacity to take responsibility. It is being active AND being a conscious agent for yourself.
The Power of Agency by Paul Napper and Anthony Rao presents 7 Principles of self-agency. In this Blogpost I will focus on the first principle – ‘Control Stimuli’.
Many of us are unaware of the extensiveness of stimuli that surrounds us. This includes interactions with people in daily lives; background noise in our environments as we move from one place to another each day; digital stimulation from screens to social media; and cluttered spaces.
Napper and Rao discuss control ing stimuli as, “Managing your exposure to external stimuli will increase the quality of your thinking, the quality of your judgement, and the quality of your life overall.” They further state that, “Learning to control environmental stimuli is a great source of agency because it involves us taking an active role in determining what environment is best for us.”
12 Ways to Take Command of Your Life by Controlling Stimuli
Here are a few simple, practical ways to practice personal agency by controlling stimuli as presented by Paul Napper and Anthony Rao:
- Remove Yourself
- Avoid the Junk
- Lose the Phone
- Take Notes by Hand
- Limit Social Media
- Embrace Boredom
- Get Outside
- Be Here Now
- Be on Guard
