Counseling and therapy are about recovery; coaching is about discovery. Counseling often focuses on resolving difficulties arising from past events and traumas; coaching is future-focused and assumes you are whole, competent, capable and resourceful.

It depends on the individuals needs. For certain types of focused coaching, 4-6 months may work. For other types, individuals may find longer periods work.
